Pulse African electronic music, mapped

Each ring pulses to its city's tempo.
Magenta slow, acid fast.

Every city has a tempo.
Hear it, then go there.

Pulse is Sonic Paths' live map and radio of African electronic music: 37 cities, 213 artists and collectives and 40 dated festivals, researched city by city from the organisers, the labels and the trade press. Each city pulses at the tempo of its signature sound, from amapiano at 113 BPM to singeli at 200, and the sets play through the artists' own players while you fly from the continent down to the street.

      Kampire

      The bass carrier of Kampala

A DJ and core member of Kampala's Nyege Nyege collective, known for bass-heavy sets. Her compilation Kampire Presents: A Dancefloor in Ndola came out on Strut in 2024, and she recorded RA Podcast RA.995 in 2025. She played Boiler Room x Ballantine's True Music Johannesburg on 11 May 2024, back to back with Coco Em, and was on the 2025 Nyege Nyege tenth-anniversary bill. Her sounds in the data: bass, club, amapiano, Afro-electronic fusion.

      DJ Travella

Singeli, exported from Dar es Salaam

A Tanzania-listed singeli DJ on Nyege Nyege Tapes, according to the label's Resident Advisor page. First RA event in 2022, then bookings across London, Brussels, Paris, New York and Berlin, and billed as a headliner of Nyege Nyege 2025. Singeli is Dar es Salaam's own form: it emerged in the mid-2000s in Tandale and Mtogole from vigodoro parties, and published tempos run from 180 to 300 BPM, which is why Dar sits at the fast end of this map. His home city is assumed from the sources rather than stated.

A Kenyan producer who co-founded Hakuna Kulala, with Tomo released on the label on 1 February 2019, then Attrition on Planet Mu, and his own label Xternal Domain launched in December 2025. Pan African Music reports that Skrillex's team connected with him around Nyege Nyege 2025. His sounds in the data: industrial, footwork, trap, club. His home city is assumed to be Nairobi; the sources do not state it.

Issue 002 is in research: West Africa, Lagos and Accra. New sets are being added to the radio as they are checked.

      Method

      How Pulse is made

Every city, artist, collective and festival here comes from a research pass on 8 October 2026 that fetched and checked each source: Resident Advisor, Boiler Room, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Pan African Music, Bandcamp Daily, OkayAfrica, the organisers' own sites and the labels' Bandcamp pages. Artist links are only shown where the page was fetched and matched. Festivals carry dates only when the organiser or the trade press has published them. Artists sit in a ring around their city, never at an address; nights that run at rotating or private locations are never pinned. The tempo of each city is the typical tempo of its signature sound: published ranges where a source gives one, an editorial estimate otherwise, and each panel says which. Images on artist cards are the artists' own published artwork and press images, credited by source.

      What is Pulse?

Pulse is the African electronic music section of Sonic Paths: a live map, an atlas of 213 artists and collectives in 37 cities, and a curated non-stop radio built from the artists' own published sets. Every city pulses at the tempo of its signature sound.

What does the tempo of a city mean?

Each city is given the typical tempo of its signature sound: amapiano in Johannesburg at 110 to 115 BPM, gqom in Durban at about 120 to 130, singeli in Dar es Salaam at 200 to 300. Published ranges are shown where a source gives one; the rest are editorial estimates and marked as such. Colour follows tempo, from magenta (slow) through coral and amber to acid (fast).

      How does the radio work?

Pulse Radio plays artist-hosted sets one after another using the artists' own embedded players (SoundCloud, with Mixcloud and YouTube where an artist publishes there), so no licences are needed and every play counts for the artist. Bandcamp has no remote control, so Bandcamp releases play on demand only. Modes: All, City, Sound and Wander. When the radio moves on, the map flies to the next artist's city.

Where do the facts come from?

From a research pass on 8 October 2026 that fetched and checked each source: Resident Advisor, Boiler Room, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Pan African Music, Bandcamp Daily and the organisers' own sites. Each artist card links to the sources. Festival dates appear only when the organiser or the trade press has published them.

Why are some venues not on the map?

Artists sit in a ring around their city, never at an address, and nights that run at rotating or private locations are never pinned. Where a scene lives under legal or social pressure, the city panel says so before you go.

      What is New Frequencies?

New Frequencies is the written series inside Pulse. Issue 001 covers East Africa: Kampire in Kampala, DJ Travella in Dar es Salaam and Slikback in Nairobi, with Masaka Masaka's one-hour mix for Sønder Berlin as the set of the month.

      What is African electronic music?

Electronic dance and experimental music made in African cities and by their diasporas. On Pulse it covers 37 cities and 213 artists and collectives, and sounds such as 3-step, Afro house, amapiano, gqom, kuduro, kwaito, each with its own page, tempo and sources.

What are the main genres of African electronic music?

The sounds with their own Pulse page: 3-Step (113 to 120 BPM); Afro house (about 115 to 125 BPM); Amapiano (about 110 to 115 BPM); Gqom (126 to 130 BPM); Kuduro (about 128 to 140 BPM); Kwaito (about 95 to 105 BPM (Johannesburg)); Singeli (about 200 to 300 BPM); Sudanese electronics (Jaglara: 155 to 168 BPM. Zanig: no fixed tempo (it accelerates and decelerates)); Afro tech; Coupé-décalé; Electro-Acholi; Ethiopiyawi electronic; Kinshasa DIY electronics; Mahraganat; Nu Nairobi; Pandza; Sgubhu. The tempo table on this page gives the sourced range for each, and marks where no source gives one.

Which African city has the biggest electronic music scene?

Pulse does not measure size, but it gives each city a heat score from the research. The highest are Johannesburg (10/10: RA lists 12 upcoming Johannesburg events on 8 Oct 2026, a packed Oct-Dec 2026 festival calendar, and the city anchors the dance-music export scene of amapiano and Afro house (amapiano, Afro house)); Jinja (9/10: Annual flagship festival with a confirmed 2026 edition (19-22 Nov), 200-300 artists, and a government tourism partnership; seasonal rather than year-round); Kampala (9/10: Nyege Nyege hub plus a growing weekly venue circuit (Wild Coffee up to four events a weekend), RA lists 8 Ugandan events on 8 Oct 2026, and Uganda dominates the 2025-26 Nyege lineup; held below 10 by legal risk and a small number of regular venues).

Who is the biggest DJ in Africa?

Pulse does not rank artists, and no single measure settles it. The artist index lists all 213 artists and collectives we have checked, each with their own links, and 76 have a set that plays in the page.

What is the biggest electronic music festival in Africa?

Pulse does not rank festivals by size. Dated festivals marked high for electronic music include Pangea (Touws River, 22 Oct to 25 Oct 2026); Fabrika Festival (Monastir, 5 Nov to 9 Nov 2026); Kunye (Johannesburg, 7 Nov 2026); Nyege Nyege Festival 2026 (Jinja, 19 Nov to 22 Nov 2026); Kunda Valley (Bot River, 19 Nov 2026). The festivals page lists the dated ones we have checked, with sources.

What's the difference between Afro house, amapiano and gqom?

Afro house (about 115 to 125 BPM): Afro house is a style of house music developed mainly in South Africa, which joins a four-to-the-floor house pulse to African percussion, melodies and vocals. Amapiano (about 110 to 115 BPM): Amapiano is a slow, deep house-based dance music from the townships of Gauteng in South Africa (Johannesburg and Pretoria), which took shape in the 2010s. Gqom (126 to 130 BPM): Gqom is a dark, stripped-back dance music made by bedroom producers in the townships around Durban, South Africa, from the early 2010s.

Where can I listen to African electronic music radio?

Here. Pulse Radio plays 93 artist-hosted sets one after another through the artists' own SoundCloud, Mixcloud and YouTube players, so every play counts for them. Press Tune in at the top of the page, or play any artist and the radio carries on.
