Pulse
A beach on the Ilha de Luanda at dusk, a speaker stack, a DJ table and two plastic chairs on the sand, the lit Luanda skyline across the bay.

Kuduro started here, in the late 1980s, as batida. Its descendants, Afro house folded into kuduro and semba, are now mostly made by Angolans in Lisbon: DJ Satelite, DJ Galio's Raízes trilogy, Batida. Back in Luanda the evidence is thin and we say so. No named club could be sourced. What the research found is two parties on the Ilha de Luanda, one at the Praça do Artesanato from six in the evening on 20 December, one an afternoon DJ session. Love Kuduro drew 14,000 people in January 2012 and no recent edition can be verified. The international airport moved in December 2025. If you run a night on the island, write to us; the page is waiting.

Sounds of Luanda

Each sound has its own page: what it is, its tempo where a source gives one, where it comes from and who carried it.

The scene

Luanda is the birthplace of kuduro (late 1980s, per Wikipedia, as 'batida'), and its descendants - Afro house fused with kuduro/semba - are now largely produced by Angolans in Lisbon (DJ Satelite, DJ Galio's Raizes trilogy 2024-25, Batida). We found no verified Luanda electronic club or festival calendar: a city events guide lists no electronic events, and Love Kuduro (Luanda, Jan 2012, 14,000 attendees) has no verified recent edition.

What we know, and what we are still looking for. No named Luanda club could be sourced; the recent evidence is two island party listings. If you run a night, a label or a collective in Luanda, or you know one, tell us on the Collaborate page and we will check it and add it.

Why it sits at heat 4
Sound is globally relevant (Satelite/Galio, Batida) but evidence of local 2025-26 club/festival activity is missing; most documented output is Lisbon-based diaspora.
