In the room

The experience

You take a seat in the open-air theatre below the Sphinx and the desert goes properly dark. Then Khafre's pyramid ignites violet, the Sphinx blooms pink, and a voice begins to tell you how old everything is. This is the ground where the Grateful Dead played three nights in 1978, the last under a total lunar eclipse, and where a crowd reported at more than 100,000 counted the millennium in. Both times the audience came for the setting first and the music second. The judgement is uncomfortable but fair: the pyramids do not need a soundtrack, so every concert here is a negotiation with a monument that has been upstaging people for more than four and a half thousand years. In October 2026 techno tried again, across several stages, with light making the pyramids seem to float above the main stage. The Sphinx, as ever, does not blink.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Since April 2025 the plateau is entered through a new gate on the Fayoum Desert Road, not the old entrance by the Marriott Mena House, and daytime access closes at 16:00, so evening shows are a separate trip.

Why it fits

Why it is in the atlas

Sonic Paths features Giza because almost nowhere else makes its setting the headline. Every performance here, from a 1978 rock residency to a laser-lit techno weekend, is measured against the plateau itself. What the place does to sound is mostly to shrink it, which is why the concerts that work are the ones that treat the monument as the star.

FAQ

Questions people ask

When is Starlight Festival at the Pyramids?

The next edition is announced for 5 and 6 November 2027 at the Great Pyramids of Giza, with pre-registration open on starlight-festival.org. The first edition ran on 9 and 10 October 2026.

How much are Starlight Festival tickets?

Prices for the 2027 edition are not published yet; the organiser offers early-bird access to people who pre-register at starlight-festival.org.

Can I see the pyramids lit up at night without the festival?

Yes. The Sound and Light show runs in the evenings from an open-air theatre beside the Sphinx; the official site lists adult tickets at USD 20 and children aged 6 to 12 at USD 11.

Have big concerts happened at the pyramids before?

Yes, but rarely: the Grateful Dead (September 1978), Frank Sinatra (1979), Jean-Michel Jarre (31 December 1999), Sting (2001) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (2019) are the best known.

Is a night at the pyramids worth it?

For the setting, almost nothing compares: a floodlit Sphinx and three pyramids are the show, whoever is on stage. Treat the music as a bonus and book the evening rather than the day.

The Grateful Dead played here in 1978 and the last night had a total lunar eclipse. Every concert at Giza has to compete with that.
