Sounds of Dar es Salaam

Each sound has its own page: what it is, its tempo where a source gives one, where it comes from and who carried it.

The scene

Dar es Salaam is singeli's home: the genre emerged in the mid-2000s in Tandale/Mtogole (Kinondoni) from vigodoro parties, and producers such as Sisso, Duke (Pamoja Records), Jay Mitta, Bamba Pana and DJ Longo are exported through Nyege Nyege Tapes. Newer scenes include Midimu (Aziz, Big Sam, Pweza), whose Midi Fest in Pugu Hills Forest grew from 10 participants (2023) to 200 (2024), and Arafa's BUILT Studio/ALTAER. Tanzania's contested 29 Oct 2025 election brought a curfew and nationwide internet blackout, which hurt event work.

What we know, and what we are still looking for. No named, currently operating Dar es Salaam club with electronic programming could be sourced; general nightlife guides list bars and hotel lounges without genre detail. If you run a night, a label or a collective in Dar es Salaam, or you know one, tell us on the Collaborate page and we will check it and add it.

Why it sits at heat 6
Singeli is the region's most visible export (Boiler Room, Unsound, Berlin Panorama Bar), Midi Fest grew twenty-fold in a year, but RA shows no dated listings and the Oct 2025 election blackout disrupted events.
