The experience

The wind finds you first. Essaouira sits on the Atlantic with the trade winds pushing through its streets, and by the time you reach the square your hair is full of salt and the whole town seems to be leaning one way. Then you hear it: the iron qraqeb, the big metal castanets, a chattering wall of them, and under it the deep, patient pulse of the guembri, the three-string bass lute the maâlem plays. A procession of masters in bright robes moves through the town, and the crowd closes behind it like water. Later come the collaborations, and some work better than others. The parade is the point. Stay for it, follow it, and let the drumming and the salt air do their work until dark. The last note leaves the ramparts, and the wind takes it out to sea.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Buses from Marrakech (Supratours and CTM) take about three hours, and seats on the next departure are rarely free, so book your ticket the day before. Bring a windproof layer: Essaouira is windy most days of the year.

Why it fits

Why it is in the atlas

Sonic Paths features the Gnaoua festival because it turns an entire fortified Atlantic port into a stage for a living spiritual and healing music tradition, recognised by UNESCO in 2019, and then invites the world in. The maâlem's guembri and the iron castanets are heard here against sea wind and old ramparts, not inside a hall.

When to go, hours, getting there

Best time to go

Late June: the 2026 edition ran from 25 to 27 June, and the 28th edition is announced for 24 to 26 June 2027. Essaouira is known as the windy city, with good winds on most days of the year, so evenings by the ocean are breezy. Book rooms and transport well ahead (advice).

Hours

Event days only; see official site. The 2026 edition ran over three days, 25 to 27 June, with the opening parade of the Gnaoua maâlems followed by concerts, including on the Moulay Hassan stage.
