A note on this place

Sossusvlei is a place to listen. No stage, no programme; the sound is silence.

In the room

The experience

Sossusvlei is a place to listen, not a named venue. There is no stage and no programme here: the sound is silence. It is a salt and clay pan in the southern Namib Desert, inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park, ringed by some of the tallest dunes in the world, the highest about 325 metres. You leave the camp at 4.30am and the dunes are a deep mauve in the pre-dawn. Sound here is calibrated differently. What you hear is your own breath, the soft give of sand under boot, the very occasional crack of cooling rock. When the sun finally clears the eastern ridge, the whole valley turns blood-orange in about three minutes, and the silence becomes, somehow, louder.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Stay inside the park at Sesriem to get on the dune road before dawn. Once you are out on the dunes, stop talking and stay still for five minutes.

Why it fits

Why it is in the atlas

The continent's purest natural-outdoor listening environment. An antidote chapter for the festival pages.

Plan the trip

When to go, hours, getting there

Best time to go

Dawn is the listening window. Dune 45 lies 45 km from the Sesriem gate and Deadvlei is about 2 km from Sossusvlei. Cooler months (April to September) are the listening months; October to March is very hot.

Hours

Park gates open at sunrise (varies by season). No music is programmed here: any sunrise listening session a lodge offers is arranged by that lodge, so ask before you book.

Getting there

Fly Windhoek (WDH), then drive roughly five hours south to Sesriem (the park gate). From Sesriem a 60 km tarmac road leads to Sossusvlei, and the final 6 km needs a 4WD.
