Listening bars · Bangkok

Where the record plays to the end

Bangkok's listening rooms sit behind a blue door in Silom, up hotel stairs in Ari, and down a quiet soi off Sukhumvit 36 where every album plays from the first track to the last. This is where to sit, what each room asks of you, and how to string the nights together.

The city has two kinds of room. The first is the listening room: a serious system, a selector or a set album, and a table card that asks for low voices. Freaking Out The Neighborhood plays records whole and posts the week's albums in advance. OBi Record Bar takes Japan's jazz kissa and gives it a Bangkok address. SIWILAI's upstairs bar runs OJAS horns built for the space.

The second is the record bar: vinyl-led, social, the DJ talking to the table next to you. Yayyyyy, Sober, Long Play, Modern-Day Culture. Both kinds are here, labelled so you know what you are walking into. The rule for this page is the atlas rule: people are there to listen. Where a room is social first, it says so.

    Etiquette

    How a listening bar works

Six things the room will not tell you out loud. Sourced where a claim is made.

    1. The room chooses the record

In Japan's jazz kissa, which began in 1929 and numbered more than 800 by the 1960s, the owner is the selector. Most play whole LP sides, not single tracks. Bangkok's Freaking Out The Neighborhood and OBi carry that on: the album, or the host, decides.

      National Geographic, 5 Feb 2026
    2. Sit where the speakers point

The sweet spot is between the speakers, a few seats back. Bar Martha in Tokyo asks for it; SIWILAI's upstairs room was built around it. Take the seat facing the system, not the one facing your friend.

      Sonic Paths
    3. Voices low, or none

Rules vary. Tokyo's Dig banned talking outright; Eagle bans it until six. Freaking Out puts a handwritten card on the table. Deaf Shop's owners say hear more, say less. Read the card, then read the room.

      National Geographic, 5 Feb 2026
    4. Order once, order well

A listening bar sells time, not rounds. Freaking Out's stated rule is one order per guest. Choose something you can hold for a side.

      ListenBars directory
    5. Requests only when invited

Some rooms want your record: Yayyyyy and John Lemon say bring one; Lennon's lets you browse with the staff. Album rooms do not. Ask with your eyes before you ask with your mouth.

Time Out Bangkok, 24 Jul 2026
    6. Phones down, no flash

A dark room is dark on purpose. Bar Martha forbids photographs of the bar, the drinks and the system. Elsewhere, the rule is unwritten but the same: no flash, no filming the selector.

      Sonic Paths

    The rooms, by neighbourhood

    14 rooms, labelled honestly

Listening room means the records come first and the room asks for quiet. Record bar means vinyl-led and social. Each card says which, and when it was last checked.

The listening-bar spine of the city. Three BTS stops, four rooms, all walkable from the Skytrain if the heat allows.

    Freaking Out The Neighborhood

Every album plays start to finish on a JBL 4344 system, with the week's records posted in advance. The strictest room in Bangkok.

    The room

A small, dark room off Soi Sukhumvit 36: two four-seat tables and a counter, closer to a friend's flat than a bar. The record goes on and it stays on until the run-out groove. Weekly album schedules are posted ahead of time, so you can come for a specific pressing and listen with people who came for the same thing. A handwritten card on the table asks for low voices. The owner-verified listing on ListenBars gives the speakers as JBL 4344, and a one-order-per-guest house rule. Programme leans alternative, indie, rock, experimental jazz, electronica and trip hop; it has run ticketed pre-release listening sessions with seated playback.

02Live jazz down, vinyl room upDaily 19:00 to 01:00

    Alonetogether

Live jazz on the ground floor Wednesday to Sunday; a quieter second-floor room of rare vintage pressings above it.

    The room

A jazz bar on Soi Sukhumvit 31 with vintage furniture, a long counter and dim gold light, a black piano and a drum kit at the back. Bands play Wednesday to Sunday. The floor above is the reason it is on this page: a listening room that plays records from Recoroom Vinyl & Vintage Audio, stocked with rare pressings across jazz, soul, funk, pop and classic rock, and pitched for quiet company or an hour alone. It is a collaboration between the owners of Sugar Ray and Ku Bar, and the cocktails carry both.

    Modern-Day Culture

Started by friends who have collected for 20 years. Soul and hip-hop from a record booth, cocktails built on Thai herbs.

    The room

An Ekkamai room that mixes classic detail with a current look, run by friends who have collected records for more than two decades and opened the bar to get more people listening to vinyl. DJs work a record booth and talk to the tables nearest them: soul, hip-hop, R&B, funk. The drinks are the other half of the idea, cocktails built on traditional Thai herbs, botanical teas and old medicinal recipes, with natural wine alongside. Records are chosen to go with what is in the glass, which tells you the register: social, not silent.

Japan's jazz kissa given a Silom address: a large blue door, dark wood, rare Japanese pressings, and a host called the Bar Viber.

    The room

Hidden behind a large blue door on Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Road, opened in 2026 by the team that ran Yayyyyy Record Bar. The name is the obi, the paper strip that wraps a Japanese pressing, and the shelves behind the dark wooden counter hold the pressings to match. Everything plays from vinyl. The person on the decks is not called a DJ but a Bar Viber, a host responsible for the drinks, the sound and the feel of the evening, adjusting tracks, lighting and level as the night turns from jazz to soul, city pop, funk, hip-hop and R&B. The room

Two floors inside Central: The Original Store, a Central Group heritage building by the river, interior by Kunichi Nomura's Tripster. Downstairs is the live room: six OJAS 12-inch coaxial speakers around a grand piano under a high glass ceiling. Upstairs is the Audiophile Bar, and it is the reason it is on this page: a pair of OJAS 816 speakers designed for the room by Devon Turnbull, an original Urei 1620 mixer, Technics 1210s with Goldring E3 cartridges, a McIntosh MC252 amplifier and more than a thousand albums, played free-form to the mood of the room. Known to regulars as Yai's Bar, one shophouse wide, in a 77-year-old building on the edge of Nang Loeng. More than 1,500 records on the shelves. • Rail stops around midnight. After that it is Grab, and Grab is cheap and everywhere. Open the card's Google Maps pin and show the driver the screen.
    • The listening rooms are small. Freaking Out has two tables and a counter. Go early, go in twos, and do not bring a party of eight.
    • The legal drinking age is 20, and hotel bars check (Rosewood's stated policy).

    FAQ

    Questions people ask

What is a listening bar in Bangkok?

A bar where the records come first: a serious sound system, a selector or a set album, and a room that asks you to listen. Freaking Out The Neighborhood plays albums whole on a JBL 4344 system and posts its schedule in advance; OBi Record Bar follows Japan's jazz kissa tradition behind a blue door in Silom; SIWILAI Sound Club's upstairs Audiophile Bar runs custom OJAS horns. Record bars like Yayyyyy and Sober play vinyl too, but they are social rooms first.

What are the best listening bars in Bangkok?

Sonic Paths does not rank. The strictest listening rooms on this page are Freaking Out The Neighborhood (albums played start to finish, low voices asked for), OBi Record Bar (jazz kissa lineage, all vinyl, a host who shapes the night) and SIWILAI Sound Club's Audiophile Bar (the most documented sound system in the city). aftersun in Bang Bon and Soulmate in Lat Phrao are listening bars with a homelier register.

Which vinyl bars in Bangkok are near the BTS?

Freaking Out The Neighborhood is six minutes from BTS Thong Lo. OBi Record Bar is eight minutes from BTS Chong Nonsi. Lennon's is linked to BTS Phloen Chit. Long Play is eight minutes from BTS Ari. Modern-Day Culture and Club Salva are ten to eighteen minutes from BTS Ekkamai or Thong Lo. Sober Record Bar is seven minutes from MRT Wat Mangkon, and Japhoochonpak six minutes from MRT Fai Chai. Yayyyyy, Soulmate and aftersun need a Grab.

Do I need to book a listening bar in Bangkok?

Mostly no. Freaking Out The Neighborhood, OBi, Yayyyyy, Sober and Modern-Day Culture are walk-in rooms, though Freaking Out runs occasional ticketed listening sessions announced on Instagram. Lennon's at the Rosewood takes reservations and asks for smart casual dress. Soulmate asks you to message ahead on Friday and Saturday because seats are limited. Long Play takes table bookings through the hotel.

Is there a hi-fi bar in Bangkok with a serious sound system?

SIWILAI Sound Club: custom OJAS speakers designed for the space by Devon Turnbull, a pair of OJAS 816s upstairs with a Urei 1620 mixer, Technics 1210s with Goldring E3 cartridges and a McIntosh MC252 amplifier, six OJAS coaxials downstairs (Mixmag Asia). Freaking Out The Neighborhood lists JBL 4344 monitors on its owner-verified ListenBars entry. Other rooms on this page do not publish their equipment, so this page does not guess.

What should I do in a listening bar?

Sit where the speakers point. Order once, and order something you will nurse. Keep your voice low; at Freaking Out there is a card on the table asking for it. Do not request tracks unless the bar invites it (Yayyyyy and Lennon's do; Freaking Out does not). Phones down and no flash. Leave when the record ends, not in the middle of it.

How much does a night at a Bangkok listening bar cost?

Published figures only: OBi Record Bar is 500 to 1,000 baht a head (The Standard, July 2026). Freaking Out The Neighborhood's mixed drinks run from about 400 baht (a visitor's account, January 2026). aftersun's draught beer starts at about 130 to 150 baht (Time Out). Lennon's is a hotel bar and priced like one. The rest do not publish prices.
