The room
Soi Sukhumvit 31 is also called Soi Sawasdee, which is worth knowing when the Grab driver looks blank. Number 29 is a jazz bar in the old sense: vintage furniture, a long counter, dim gold light, a black piano and a drum kit at the back wall waiting for whoever is on. Bands play Wednesday to Sunday. Downstairs is not the reason the room is in the atlas, though it is a good reason to be in the building.
The reason is upstairs. The second floor is a listening room stocked by Recoroom Vinyl and Vintage Audio with rare pressings across jazz, soul, funk, pop and classic rock, and pitched, in Time Out's words, for quiet company or an hour alone. The name is the floor plan. You can be alone up there while a quintet works downstairs, and the stairs are the only thing between the two.
Who made it
The people
It is a collaboration between the owners of Sugar Ray and Ku Bar, two of Bangkok's better cocktail rooms, which is why the drinks list reads like one. Nobody has published a founding date, and the bar has not minded.

The night
Catch a set downstairs, then take the next drink up to the records. Classic cocktails are the order, and Time Out gives the hours as 19:00 to 01:00 every night of the week. Live nights fill the ground floor, so phone ahead for a table if the band matters to you. The upstairs room does not take bookings for the simple reason that it was built for people who turned up on their own.
