In the room
The experience
Bar Martha is a listening bar in Ebisu, one of three run by Wataru Fukuyama's group alongside Bar Track and Bar Nica. The rules are the first thing you meet. No photography inside, of the room, the drinks, the records or the sound system. Voices stay low, because the owner says loud talk interferes with the music. He also asks that the bar is not promoted on social media. Visitors who have written it up sum it up as no talk, no photos, no requests. They say the rules are explained in English at the door. Those same accounts describe Garrard 301 decks and Tannoy speakers; the official site says nothing about equipment. It opens at 19:00 and runs to 03:00, year-round, closing for a few days at New Year and in summer. Reservations are not accepted. Go quietly, listen, and leave the phone in your pocket.
