Listening bars · Chiang Mai

One shop, one bar, a record wall

Chiang Mai's listening scene is small enough to walk in an evening and personal enough to remember. A vinyl bar on Prapokklao Road whose mood changes with the day of the week, an all-analogue room up a wooden staircase ninety metres away, and a record shop in Suthep with sofas facing the speakers.

There is one listening bar in the strict sense, and it opened in May 2022 because two people decided the city needed it. Deaf Shop, inside the Old City walls, is run by Mum Pimolpud and Laurens Brouwer, the DJ behind Liquorish Records, on a philosophy they put as hear more, say less. The programme bends by the night: a conversation on Thursday, a dance on Friday and Saturday, afro-jazz and reggae on a Sunday afternoon.

Around it is a ring of rooms that play records without asking for silence: Fung, upstairs at Nuii Bar, all analogue; John Lemon, a burger bistro with a vinyl lounge where you pick the record; The Toys Club east of the river with DJ Bird's crates; and Thirty Records, a shop in Suthep where the hi-fi takes the whole back wall and the owner lets students sit and learn what analogue sounds like. One date matters now: Deaf Shop is on a two-week break after its four-year party and reopens on 30 October 2026.

    Etiquette

    How a listening bar works

Six things the room will not tell you out loud. Sourced where a claim is made.

    1. The room chooses the record

In Japan's jazz kissa, which began in 1929 and numbered more than 800 by the 1960s, the owner is the selector. Most play whole LP sides, not single tracks. Bangkok's Freaking Out The Neighborhood and OBi carry that on: the album, or the host, decides.

      National Geographic, 5 Feb 2026
    2. Sit where the speakers point

The sweet spot is between the speakers, a few seats back. Bar Martha in Tokyo asks for it; SIWILAI's upstairs room was built around it. Take the seat facing the system, not the one facing your friend.

      Sonic Paths
    3. Voices low, or none

Rules vary. Tokyo's Dig banned talking outright; Eagle bans it until six. Freaking Out puts a handwritten card on the table. Deaf Shop's owners say hear more, say less. Read the card, then read the room.

      National Geographic, 5 Feb 2026
    4. Order once, order well

A listening bar sells time, not rounds. Freaking Out's stated rule is one order per guest. Choose something you can hold for a side.

      ListenBars directory
    5. Requests only when invited

Some rooms want your record: Yayyyyy and John Lemon say bring one; Lennon's lets you browse with the staff. Album rooms do not. Ask with your eyes before you ask with your mouth.

Time Out Bangkok, 24 Jul 2026
    6. Phones down, no flash

A dark room is dark on purpose. Bar Martha forbids photographs of the bar, the drinks and the system. Elsewhere, the rule is unwritten but the same: no flash, no filming the selector.

    Deaf Shop

Chiang Mai's vinyl listening bar since May 2022: pick an LP from the wall, or let the owners run the night. Reopens 30 October 2026.

    The room

A small, cosy room on Prapokklao Road inside the Old City, with a second-floor gallery for local artists. Mum Pimolpud and Laurens Brouwer, who DJs as Oomboi Lauw and runs the independent label Liquorish Records, opened it in May 2022 after a 2018 tour of Japan's bars. The idea, in their words, is to hear more and say less, and the music never dwells on one genre for long: soul, jazz, reggae, funk and hip-hop through to dub, ambient, EBM, techno, jungle, house, gqom and footwork, from the 1960s to now. Racks along one wall let you pick an LP; wall displays of covers change daily. Guest DJs from across Thailand, a monthly Tape Night, festival-themed parties. The week has a shape. Thursday is relaxed and conversation-friendly, hip-hop, funk, indie and punk. Friday and Saturday are big beats and dancing. Sunday afternoon is down-tempo afro-jazz and reggae. For listening, go Thursday or Sunday.

Fung Record Bar, upstairs at Nuii Bar

Up a wooden staircase in a converted traditional house: analogue all the time, good speakers, a Beatles-themed highball, ninety metres from Deaf Shop.

    The room

A two-level conversion of a traditional house on Prapokklao Soi 1. Nuii Bar downstairs has the food menu and guest DJs playing from laptops. Fung, up the wooden stairs, is the reason it is here: all analogue, all the time, funk, indie, disco and rock on vinyl, and, in Time Out's words, the speakers are good and the tunes rock. It is pitched as a sit-down, drink-and-chat room rather than a silent one. Its proximity to Deaf Shop makes it the natural second stop, or the first on a Monday to Wednesday when Deaf Shop is shut.

Khun Munee's shop in Suthep, opened in early 2023: Thai and Western artists on vinyl and cassette, cheap crates full of Japanese finds, and starter boxes of three LPs for 100 baht to get new collectors going. The back of the shop is the point. A high-end hi-fi runs the width of the wall, with sofas to lean back on and listen; the owner-verified ListenBars entry gives the speakers as Pioneer CS-77A and Diatone DS-36BR, and the programme as post-1950s jazz, fusion, Japanese jazz and 1980s Japanese pop. University students come to learn what analogue sounds like. Not a bar, and daytime only: it is the afternoon before the night.

DJ Bird moved his First Press collection here: jazz, funk and city pop with hip-hop, house and electro, DJs almost every night, retro consoles everywhere.

    The room

East of the river on San Pa Koi Road, a laid-back café by day and a cocktail bar by night packed with retro games and consoles, mostly Japanese. DJ Bird brought his vinyl collection over from his former bar, First Press: jazz, funk and city pop at the core, hip-hop, house and electro added since. Some records are for sale. Travelling DJs play styles from funk to drum and bass almost every night, and the bar stools face the decks. Social, loud when it wants to be.

Khun Ae has sold records in the city for five years and opened this shop in 2023: secondhand LPs and new sealed releases across pop, indie, hip-hop and jazz. FAQ

    Questions people ask

Is there a listening bar in Chiang Mai?

One in the strict sense: Deaf Shop at 36 Prapokklao Road in the Old City, a vinyl listening bar opened in May 2022 by Mum Pimolpud and Laurens Brouwer of Liquorish Records. Around it, Fung Record Bar (upstairs at Nuii Bar) is all analogue but social; John Lemon is a bistro with a vinyl lounge; The Toys Club is a DJ bar; Thirty Records in Suthep is a shop with a hi-fi listening wall and sofas.

    When does Deaf Shop reopen?

30 October 2026, according to Time Out Chiang Mai (9 October 2026). It closed for a two-week break after its four-year party on 10 October 2026. The last published hours (August 2025) are Thursday to Saturday 19:30 to midnight and Sunday 14:30 to 18:30; confirm on Instagram once it is back.

Which night is best at Deaf Shop?

It depends what you want. Thursday is the conversation-friendly night: hip-hop, funk, indie and punk at a volume you can talk over. Friday and Saturday are big beats and dancing. Sunday afternoon is down-tempo afro-jazz and reggae. For listening, Thursday or Sunday.

Where are the vinyl bars in Chiang Mai?

Three in the Old City: Deaf Shop (36 Prapokklao Road), Fung Record Bar (2nd floor of Nuii Bar, 46 Prapokklao Road Soi 1, ninety metres away) and John Lemon (33 Samlarn Road, west side). The Toys Club is east of the river at 46/1 San Pa Koi Road. Thirty Records is a shop at 40 Sanambin Kao 4 Alley in Suthep, and Noomtaofire Record is a shop at 62/6 Charoen Prathet Road near the Night Bazaar.

Does Deaf Shop have a good sound system?

No source publishes its equipment, so this page does not guess. The owners describe the idea rather than the gear: hear more, say less, and a collection curated by Oomboi Lauw that moves through soul, jazz, reggae, funk, hip-hop, dub, ambient, techno, jungle, house, gqom and footwork. Thirty Records is the room with published speakers: Pioneer CS-77A and Diatone DS-36BR on its owner-verified ListenBars listing.

Do I need to book a listening bar in Chiang Mai?

No. Every room on this page is walk-in. The only things to check are days: Deaf Shop is closed Monday to Wednesday, Thirty Records is closed Wednesday and shuts at 18:00, and The Toys Club is closed Monday. Fung and John Lemon list daily hours.
