In the room
The room
Prapokklao Road runs north to south through the walled old city, past temples and guesthouses, and number 36 is a small room with records racked along one wall and a display of sleeves that changes daily. Upstairs is a gallery for local artists. You can pull an LP from the rack and ask for it, or leave the night to the house. The motto is four words, hear more, say less, the same four In Sheep's Clothing uses in New York, and it only works if the room is built for it. This one is small enough that it is.
Who made it
The people
Mum Pimolpud spent years in Bangkok's music industry. Laurens Brouwer DJs as Oomboi Lauw, held a residency at Red Light Radio in Amsterdam, and runs the label Liquorish Records; he first came to Asia on tour in 2018 and found the Japanese bars. They opened in May 2022. "No one was waiting for this," Brouwer told Time Out three years later, "but we felt it was what the city needed." Then, in case that sounded modest: "Don't wait for demand, make the demand." The bar is now a partner of Poy Festival, the December vinyl fair whose co-founder wants Chiang Mai to be a music city, and the collection runs from 1960s soul and reggae through dub, EBM, jungle, gqom and footwork without staying anywhere long.
Which night
The night
The week has a shape, and it is printed. Thursday is hip-hop, funk, indie and punk at conversation volume. Friday and Saturday are big beats and dancing. Sunday afternoon is afro-jazz and reggae with the doors open, 14:30 to 18:30. Guest DJs come from across Thailand; there is a monthly Tape Night. On 10 October 2026 the bar held its four-year party with Selecta Roots Muang, Moodyboom and Oomboi Lauw, all vinyl, then shut for a fortnight. It reopens on 30 October. For afterwards, Fung Record Bar is ninety metres up the road, upstairs at Nuii, analogue all the way.

Insider tip
Walk in knowing
Thursday for a quiet record, Sunday afternoon (14:30 to 18:30) for afro-jazz and reggae with the doors open. Walk in; it is small. Fung Record Bar is a one-minute walk for the second drink.
Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
A listening bar that prints which nights are for listening and which are for dancing, which is a more honest answer to the listening-bar problem than most cities have found.
