In the room

The experience

You climb the peninsula with your calves complaining and the Wear going green below, and the building arrives all at once: two towers, a nave that keeps going, pillars cut with zigzags as if somebody took a chisel to them in a temper nine hundred years ago. Inside it is darker than you expect and quieter than a room this size has any right to be. Come for Evensong and sit near the quire. The voices go up into the vaults and the stone hands them back for what one sound engineer measured at five seconds and more, which feels longer when you are inside it. Nobody claps. You sit there and let a building begun in 1093 finish the note.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Why it fits

Why it is in the atlas

A Norman cathedral is a listening room on a scale nobody would build today. The vaults that made architectural history also hold a note for seconds, which is why the choir sings with the building rather than in it, and why autumn light and sound shows such as Luxmuralis's Time fill the nave.
