In the room
The experience
You come at it along the River Alde under a huge Suffolk sky, and the hall looks like what it was: a big working building for malting barley. There is nothing grand about the approach and that is exactly the point. Inside, the finish is minimal and industrial, and there is no gilt to distract you. What you notice is the light, and then the quiet, a proper Suffolk quiet, before the first note. The sound is clear and warm and looks you in the eye. It is one of the finest rooms in the country and it does not say so. Fire hit it on the opening night of the 1969 festival, and it was back for the next, and you can feel that stubbornness in the way it holds an orchestra. When the last note fades, you step out into big skies and the smell of mud and salt.

Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
A malthouse turned into one of Britain's finest halls, by a composer who wanted a home for his own festival. Derek Sugden designed the acoustic, and the Twentieth Century Society calls the auditorium one of the finest in the world. What it does to sound is keep it clear and honest, with nothing gilded to flatter it, which suits chamber and orchestral music alike.
