Planning a trip
Hearing music in Egypt
Cairo Jazz Club suits night owls: jazz, funk, electronic and Arabic fusion in a long room up one flight of stairs. It programmes every day of the week, reservations are necessary and held until 9:30pm, and the door is for couples and mixed groups aged 23 and over with printed ID. Cairo Opera House suits a formal evening of classical, opera, Arab symphonic and ballet. A jacket is required and jeans are not allowed. Its main season runs October to May.
Avoid Ramadan at the opera house, as programming pauses, and it closes for July and August maintenance. The jazz club publishes no opening hours, so check its calendar for the night you want. Giza is different. The plateau is open daily 08:00 to 16:00 and a Sound and Light show runs most evenings, so confirm times at soundandlight.show. Concerts are rare: the next is the Starlight Festival, with main nights on 9 and 10 October 2026 and Cairo events on 8 and 11 October. One listing names 8 and 10 October for its parties, so check.
The club and the opera house are each a ten-minute taxi from Tahrir Square, and Cairo Metro Line 2 stops at Opera station, five minutes' walk from the opera house. For Giza, the nearest airports are Sphinx International and Cairo International. Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours by Uber, Careem or private transfer. Since April 2025 the plateau is entered through a gate on the Fayoum Desert Road.
