Music and concert venues in Uganda

Uganda's two entries show a scene at different moments. Nyege Nyege Festival at Kalagala Falls near Jinja is a three-night experimental and electronic gathering beside the Nile. The Jazz Safari in Kampala was a rooftop and terrace jazz festival, with its latest confirmed edition in 2015. One is a dependable annual date, the other has no confirmed recent edition.

Planning a trip

Hearing music in Uganda

Nyege Nyege suits travellers who want electronic, experimental, house and techno across six stages. It runs from Friday afternoon to Monday dawn, with camping on site and hotels in Jinja for non-campers. Listings give the site opening as Friday morning or Friday at 12:00, and it closes Monday at 12:00. Warm-up DJ nights run on the Thursday at Nile Discovery Resort, and there is no re-entry between the resort and the site after midnight. Bring mosquito repellent and sturdy footwear.

The Jazz Safari status is unconfirmed: editions were seen up to 2015 and the festival may be paused. Its date is also unclear, with one entry giving September and another the last weekend of July. Treat the Kampala Serena Hotel on Kintu Road as a starting point. Jazz Junction monthly events are listed at the Kampala Serena and Sheraton on the second Friday of each month, but check they still run.

Nyege Nyege is held on the first weekend of September. Fly to Entebbe (EBB), then take a minibus or car to Jinja, about 90 minutes. From Jinja, festival shuttles run hourly to Kalagala Falls, 45 minutes. For Kampala, drive 40 minutes north from Entebbe, and take taxis from any hotel district.
