The Elbphilharmonie opened on 11 January 2017, a glass wave set on top of a 1960s brick warehouse at the tip of the HafenCity, designed by Herzog and de Meuron. Its own figures, last updated in April 2026, are the ones to keep: about 6,200 concerts, 130 world premieres, seven million concert guests, and 29 million people up to the Plaza, the public viewing deck between the brick and the glass. The escalators in the Tube, the 82-metre curved one that gets you there, have travelled 102,130 kilometres in ten years. Somebody in Hamburg counts everything.
It is the most-looked-at page in the Sonic Paths atlas and one of the least clicked, which tells us people want a practical answer rather than an adjective. So this is the practical answer, checked against elbphilharmonie.de on 20 October 2026, with the dates on which it stops being true where we know them.
The room

The Grand Hall holds up to 2,100 people in a vineyard layout: terraces of seats rising around the stage on every side, so that nobody is more than 30 metres from the musicians. That is the building's own number, and it is the whole argument of the hall. There is no back of the room. The walls are lined with the acoustic panels the venue invites you to touch on a tour, and the organ, almost 5,000 pipes, is built into the wall where you can touch that too. The Recital Hall is the smaller room; it has its own tenth birthday on 13 January 2027 with Ensemble Resonanz.
Where to sit is a question the venue answers better than we can, because it publishes a 360-degree viewer that shows the view of the stage from each of five price categories, and we have not sat in all of them. Use it. The honest version of the advice is this: in a vineyard hall the cheap seats behind the orchestra are not a punishment, they are a different concert, with the conductor's face and the brass in front of you. Decide whether you want to watch hands or hear the blend, then pick the block.
The hall is not only orchestras. Two of its own press photographs, below, show records played to a seated room: a Vinyl Listening Session with the trumpeter Theo Croker and the rapper Sammus in October 2022, and Derrick Gee's Radio Hour in November 2024. That is the format the listening-bar piece in this issue is about, in a building better known for its symphonies.

Getting in for €12
If you are under 30, the REDticket is the best deal in European concert-going that we know of: from two weeks before a concert, €12 for the best available seats, for a long list of events marked with the discount. It is sold in the ticket shops, at the box office on the night, online (choose REDdiscount when booking) or by phone. Under-30s also get 50 per cent off single tickets with ID, and there are youth subscriptions. For everyone else, advance booking dates are published under What's On, and many festival concerts go on sale during the season, so the trick is the ticket alert: save an event and the site emails you the day before sales open.
Two more things the ticket does. A concert ticket is valid as public transport in Hamburg's A to F zones on the day, there and back. And it gets you onto the Plaza from two hours before the concert without a separate Plaza ticket. A Plaza ticket, by contrast, is not a transport ticket.
The Plaza, and what it costs now

The Plaza is open every day from 10:00 to midnight, last admission 23:30, closed on 24 December and open 10:00 to 18:00 on 31 December. It is 37 metres up and the view is the panorama you came for. Entry now carries a booking fee of €5 a ticket whether you book online or buy at the Ticket Pavilion on the forecourt, which is open 10:00 to 23:30; €3 for groups of ten or more and for ages 3 to 17; free under three. Pre-booking buys you a guaranteed slot with no queue. If you have a customer account the site gives you a €5 credit per Plaza booking, which is a strange way of saying it is free if you log in; read the terms on the page before you rely on it.

What to aim for in the anniversary season
The anniversary itself is 11 January 2027: a gala concert by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra with Meute, and John Adams's Harmonielehre. Adams conducts the London Symphony Orchestra there on 24 January. The visiting orchestras run through the season: the New York Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel played on 18 and 19 October 2026 (the second night included Adams's On the Transmigration of Souls), the Chicago Symphony under Klaus Mäkelä comes on 15 and 16 January 2027, the Boston Symphony under Andris Nelsons on 15, 16 and 17 March, the San Diego Symphony under Rafael Payare on 3 May.
For something other than an orchestra: Reflektor, the hall's curated festival, is Rhiannon Giddens's for five days, 25 to 29 November 2026, and Sasha Waltz's for a weekend, 11 to 14 March 2027. Ravi Coltrane plays on 5, 8 and 16 November in the year his father would have turned 100, with Isaiah Collier's Coltrane tribute on 5 November, and a tribute to Alice Coltrane with Brandee Younger on 10 March 2027. Elbphilharmonie Visions, the contemporary festival, runs 29 January to 7 February 2027. The season closes with an Open House on 1 to 4 July 2027.
From the Plaza, and from the water

Make a trip of it

A concert at the Elbphilharmonie is two hours. Hamburg is a weekend. The hall has its own hotel inside the building, which the venue lists on its visit pages, and the HafenCity around it is walkable to the Speicherstadt warehouses you see from the Plaza. Come by the ferry if you can: line 72 from Landungsbrücken drops you at the hall's own landing stage, and the building does its best trick from the water. In the atlas, Germany's other rooms are on the country page, and the concert halls list puts this one beside the Concertgebouw and Harpa, which is the company it keeps.
“None of the up to 2,100 audience members are more than 30 metres away from the musicians.”

FAQ
Questions people ask
What are the best seats in the Elbphilharmonie?
The Grand Hall is a vineyard hall, so no seat is more than 30 metres from the stage and the seats behind the orchestra face the conductor. The venue publishes a 360° viewer showing the view from each of five price categories; use it to choose between watching the players' hands (side and rear terraces) and hearing the full blend (front-facing blocks). Under-30s can take the best available seats for €12 with a REDticket from two weeks before a concert.
Is the Elbphilharmonie Plaza free?
Not quite any more. Plaza tickets carry a €5 booking fee each (€3 for groups of ten or more and for ages 3 to 17; free under three), booked online or at the Ticket Pavilion on the forecourt. The Plaza is open daily 10:00 to 24:00, last admission 23:30. Concert ticket holders get Plaza access from two hours before their concert.
When is the Elbphilharmonie's 10th anniversary?
11 January 2027, ten years after the opening on 11 January 2017. The anniversary gala is by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra with Meute, and the 2026/27 season brings the Chicago Symphony (15 and 16 January 2027), the Boston Symphony (15 to 17 March) and Reflektor festivals curated by Rhiannon Giddens (25 to 29 November 2026) and Sasha Waltz (11 to 14 March 2027).
