In the room
The experience
You ride an 82-metre curved escalator for two and a half minutes, about 8,000 discs glittering overhead. You step out of a brick warehouse onto a Plaza 37 metres above the harbour. The river and the cranes slide past in a slow circle. The Grand Hall is a bowl: up to 2,100 seats stacked around the platform like vineyard terraces. Nobody sits more than 30 metres from the musicians. Every cough carries, and the building itself warns you so. Here is the judgement: it is an unforgiving room, thrilling when the playing is great and merciless when it is not. The quiet passages feel almost indecent. The hall says every seat sounds outstanding, though what you hear depends on which instruments sit nearest. Then the conductor lifts a hand, two thousand people go still at once, and the whole hall leans in.
Insider tip
Walk in knowing
If you hold a concert ticket, the Plaza is free from two hours before the performance, so go up first for the view. The ticket is also a valid travel pass in HVV zones A to F on the day.
Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
A new hall on a 1960s warehouse, with the audience banked all around the musicians and nobody more than 30 metres from them. Reviews of the acoustics have been mixed, yet few halls match the theatre of its setting. The official visitor advice notes that even quiet noises from the audience are clearly audible. Sonic Paths features it as the modern hall where the building, the harbour and the sound are one destination.
