In the room
The experience
Shanghai Symphony Hall opened to the public in September 2014 on Middle Fuxing Road, among the plane trees of the former French Concession. Isozaki designed the building and Nagata Acoustics, under Yasuhisa Toyota, tuned it. The main hall seats 1,200 in a vineyard layout. The audience sits around the stage with views from every side, rather than in rows in front of it. Next door is a 400-seat chamber hall, with only 87 fixed seats and the rest flexible, used for smaller forces and early music. Metro Line 10 runs beneath the building, as close as six metres, which is a quiet engineering achievement in a room built for silence. It carries the sponsor name Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall, and it is not the older Shanghai Concert Hall on East Yan'an Road. Shanghai Culture Square and the New Shanghai Theatre are within walking distance.
