In the room

The experience

The Ryman was built in 1892 as a Methodist revival tabernacle. Reverend Sam Jones preaching, the architecture engineered for brimstone clarity. Half a century later it had become a country music hall, the Grand Ole Opry's stage from 1943 to 1974. The curved pine pews still creak. The brick walls absorb just enough of the high end to settle it. Emmylou Harris's *At the Ryman* was made here, and you can hear in the room the same thing Reverend Jones figured out: the acoustic was always sacred. Hank Williams paced the dressing room. Johnny Cash and June Carter sang from the same boards.
