In the room
The experience
It looks like a room the building forgot to finish. The plaster has peeled off in patches, the ceiling fans turn slowly over wooden benches, and the bass drum on the stage has the hall's name hand-lettered across its skin. There is no curtain and no distance. The front rows are close enough to feel the horns, and everyone else leans in, which is the only correct way to hear it. This is not a concert hall and does not want to be; it is a living room where the same music has been played for the same reasons since 1961. Forty-five minutes go by like a single long breath, the band finds a last chorus and closes it clean, and the door opens onto St Peter Street, where the next crowd is already waiting, still holding its breath.
Insider tip
Walk in knowing
Tickets are sold in advance online, one per 45-minute set with no re-entry, so book before you arrive and be at the door at least 15 minutes early for direct entry. Third-party guides say the front rows sit within arm's length of the band, if that is what you are after.
Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
Sonic Paths features Preservation Hall because it is the opposite of a showpiece: a small former gallery in the French Quarter where traditional New Orleans jazz is played at close range to a room that admits around a hundred at a time. There is almost nothing between the band and the listener but old floorboard.
