In the room

The experience

You come in along the valley road and the building is not there. What stands in the Ashar Valley is a cuboid of mirror, 9,740 square metres of it, with a sandstone crag and the whole sky hanging in its skin, and only the dark glass of the doors gives it away. Inside, 500 seats are assigned on arrival, gold, silver or bronze, and the evening belongs to Arabic vocalists in the winter season. The judgement is blunt: this is architecture that behaves like a stage set for the landscape, and the concert is very nearly the second act. The best moment is the walk out afterwards, when the crowd drifts across the forecourt as reflections and the shuttle waits at the edge of the sand. Then it pulls away, and the valley closes over the mirror like water.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Standard-ticket holders ride a free shuttle from Winter Park, while only Maraya Suite guests (a private box for eight) can drive up and use valet parking; seats are assigned on arrival within your tier.

Why it fits

Why it is in the atlas

Sonic Paths features Maraya because it turns a concert hall inside out: the room is an intimate 500 seats, but the building around it is a mirror that hands the landscape back to the audience. It is a place where the architecture, not the acoustics, is the first thing you remember, and where a modern winter season plays out beside a UNESCO-listed ancient site.
