The experience

You walk down into the earth. The road drops through pine forest, the crowd thickens, and then the rim opens on a hole in Dalarna sixty metres deep, its grey limestone walls falling to a lake the colour of emerald glass. The air climbing off the water is cold and smells of wet stone. Thousands file down the terraces in the long northern light, and the quarry does what no architect could fake: it softens the sound, so the loudest moments feel rounded rather than hammered. Here is the honest bit. This is a stage that upstages most of the people on it, and you will spend the first ten minutes staring at the walls instead of the band. Let yourself. When the encore ends, the sky above the rim is still not quite dark, and the whole bowl hums with people leaving.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Take the concert bus from Rättvik rather than driving; the venue is around 7 km out of town and the official site pushes the bus as the easy option. Pack a warm layer, because the quarry is deep and the air off the lake turns cool after dark.

Why it fits

Why it is in the atlas

A quarry that behaves like a natural amphitheatre. Its rugged walls are reported to dampen echoes and give a soft sound, to the point that opera can be performed there without electronic amplification. Sonic Paths features it because the drama of the setting and the character of the sound both come from the same rock.

Sixty metres down in a Swedish quarry, with an emerald lake for a moat. The band is almost the second attraction.
