In the room
The experience
You take your seat on a grandstand facing open water, and the first thing you notice is how little is happening. Lake Constance simply sits there, darkening from pewter to ink, while a set built on a giant's scale waits in the shallows. Then the lights come up and the water goes to work for the production. It throws every gold and red reflection back at you until you cannot tell the stage from its own double. Singers move among props that are half sculpture, half machinery, and the sound seems to have been tuned to follow them. The spectacle is enormous and the intimacy is almost nil, so come for the scale, not the subtlety. Rain does not stop them, so wear a proper jacket. Doors open an hour before, and the show runs two hours without an interval. The last note hangs over the lake, the light drops, and the water turns black.
Insider tip
Walk in knowing
Wear waterproofs, not an umbrella. The festival plays on in the rain and asks you not to put up umbrellas, because they block the view. If your ticket is marked vmobil it also covers Vorarlberg buses and trains on the day.
Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
A stage in a lake with a grandstand for around 7,000 facing it. The water becomes part of the set and part of the room. Sonic Paths features it as the boldest way to hear opera outdoors. Huge scale, real weather and a new spectacle built on the water for each production.
