In the room
The experience
You duck through a Roman archway into a bowl of pink-grey stone and claim a step with no back and no number. All around you, thousands of people settle in with cushions, plastic bottles of wine and programmes folded into fans. The old rock gives the day's heat back through your clothes. Then dusk goes blue, the stage lights find the set, and a hush climbs the terraces tier by tier until even the top row is holding its breath. Be honest with yourself: by the second interval your spine will file a complaint, and Aida or Nabucco can run well past midnight. Pay it. The cheapest tier is the truest one, because the whole arena breathes as one animal and you feel it through the seat. When the last chord lands, thousands stand at once and the ancient stone throws the applause straight back at you.
Insider tip
Walk in knowing
Bring your own cushion for the unnumbered stone steps, which have no backrests (they rent them inside too). Pack the picnic in plastic, since glass and knives are not allowed.
Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
A Roman amphitheatre that became an opera house and never gave the job back. There is no roof, so the sound climbs the stone tiers and disappears into the night, and the audience is part of the room. Sonic Paths features it because it is one of the few places where you hear opera outdoors, at dusk, in a crowd of thousands, on seats older than the art form.

How do I get to the Arena di Verona?
The Arena stands on Piazza Bra. From Verona Porta Nuova station, city buses 11, 12, 13, 51 and 52 stop at the square, and Verona Villafranca airport has a shuttle to the station.
What should I bring to the Arena?
Bring a cushion if you have unnumbered stone steps, as they have no backrests and cushions can also be rented inside. Glass and knives are not allowed, so decant wine into plastic, and dress for a warm summer night.
