In the room

The experience

Disney Hall is what happens when Gehry gets to build the room he wants. From outside, six storeys of crumpled stainless steel pointed at the Hollywood Hills. Inside, a vineyard-terrace concert hall finished entirely in Douglas fir, the audience wrapped around the orchestra in steep terraces. The acoustics were designed by Minoru Nagata, with the final completion supervised by his assistant and protégé Yasuhisa Toyota. The room has a 2.2-second reverb and a 2,265-seat shape that puts every listener within 95 feet of the conductor. LA Phil residency. Gustavo Dudamel's living room.
