The experience
Volcano Extravaganza was the Fiorucci Art Trust's summer festival on Stromboli, the active volcano in Italy's Aeolian Islands. It began as an artists' residency on the island in 2008. It grew into a festival of contemporary art and performance, staged in villas and open-air sites. Music was part of it. In July 2015 the Italian DJ Daniele Baldelli played an all-night set at Mega, a club on the island. That edition ran from 17 to 27 July. The volcano supplied the low rumble under all of it. The ninth and last edition, led by Maria Loboda, ran from 18 to 21 July 2019. It closed at the Villa dei Misteri in Pompeii. Access was by invitation or confirmed attendance; there were never public tickets. The Trust operated until 2021, then became the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation. No later edition is announced, so do not plan a trip around it.
Insider tip
Walk in knowing
Check fiorucciartrust.com or the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation for any new edition before you book a crossing. Stromboli itself rewards a visit; book an authorised guide if you want to climb above 290 m.
Why it fits
Why it is in the atlas
An active volcano is the production budget, and a serious arts programme gives it a stage. The atlas needs one room that nature co-programmes.

When to go, hours, getting there
Best time to go
Past editions ran in July: 17 to 27 July 2015 and 18 to 21 July 2019. For the island itself, excursions on the volcano are permitted 11:00 to 24:00 under the 2025 Lipari ordinance; check it is still in force.
Hours
Editions confirmed 2011 to 2019; none since. On the volcano, free access ends at 290 m on the Stromboli side (130 m from Ginostra). An authorised guide is required above that, with helmet and dust mask, and 400 m is the limit. Fine of €500 for non-compliance.
Getting there
Stromboli is reached by sea. Hydrofoils run from Naples Mergellina (about 4h30, once a day) and from Milazzo in Sicily (about 1h45 at best). Car ferries take about 10h40 from Naples and about 6h from Milazzo. Timetables are seasonal: check Liberty Lines, SNAV and Siremar.
