In the room

The experience

The Michael Fowler Centre opened on 16 September 1983 at the south-east corner of Civic Square. Its entrance is on Wakefield Street, and the harbour is a bridge away. Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney designed it, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Wellington are based here. The auditorium seats 2,209 over two levels, and the venue's own fact sheet says it reflects sound evenly throughout the room. Around it are the Renouf Foyer, which takes 400 theatre-style, the Lion Harbourview Lounge for 140, and smaller rooms. Next door, Wellington Town Hall remains closed, with reopening projected for 2027, so this is the city's working concert hall. The practical points are simple. There is no public parking at the venue, tickets come from Ticketmaster NZ, and the box office opens 60 minutes before a ticketed event. At interval, the City to Sea Bridge leads to the waterfront at Whairepo Lagoon.
