In the room

The experience

Hamer Hall feels buried. Its walls are painted in the colours and patterns of Australia's gemstone deposits, so walking in is like entering a cave carved out of a hillside, deep below the street. It opened in 1982 as the Melbourne Concert Hall, took Sir Rupert Hamer's name in 2004, and closed for two years before reopening in July 2012 with a rebuilt auditorium, better acoustics and a new entrance on the river. Up to 2,464 seats across stalls, circle, balcony and a side choir balcony, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at home. Next door, the Arts Centre's spire rises 162 metres above the street.
