In the room

The experience

Carnegie Hall opened on 5 May 1891 with Walter Damrosch and Tchaikovsky conducting. The argument for it has not changed: a room built for sound before amplification, still filled most nights. The Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage seats 2,790 on five curving levels. Carnegie's own seating guide refuses to name a best seat. It gives the Parquet 'sensational acoustics' and the Second Tier 'clear sightlines and superb sound' at a lower price. The Dress Circle has a panoramic view with warm, well-rounded sound; the Balcony 'rich and detailed' sound with limited legroom. Zankel Hall, below ground on the Seventh Avenue side, seats 599. Weill Recital Hall, 268 seats, is praised by the hall for its intimacy and warmth. The box office sits at the corner of 57th and Seventh, the Rose Museum round the corner at 154 West 57th Street. Tours run Monday to Saturday in season.

Insider tip

Walk in knowing

Carnegie's own advice is that the Second Tier gives clear sightlines and superb sound at a lower price than the Parquet. Use its seating guide rather than paying for the front rows, which look upward.
