EXPEDITION SCORE / 100

The other three Paths chase heritage. This one chases a living scene at its loudest moment. Kampala's Nyege Nyege collective built the most exciting underground on the continent out of a rented villa — a residency, two record labels, a club night — and once a year it empties onto a camp on the River Nile for four days and nights. You go to the source of the sound the same week you go to the source of the river. Singeli, acholitronix, Bugandan drum-machine techno, gqom, amapiano — 300+ artists, 40+ countries, seven stages, one bend of white water. This is a fixed date, not a template: 19–22 November 2026, at Adrift Overland Camp, Kalagala Falls.

THE_PATH

The scene, then the river, then four days

Two days in Kampala to meet the sound where it's made, a slow road east to the water, then the festival itself. Land two days early — this is not a place to arrive tired.

The origin
Boutiq Studio — "the Villa"
RESIDENCY, NOT A VENUE
The rented house that has been the collective's residency and studio since 2015 — where artists from across the continent live, cook and record together. It's a workspace, not a ticketed stop; you honour it by knowing it exists and by buying the records it made, not by knocking on the door.
The labels
Nyege Nyege Tapes (2016) & Hakuna Kulala (2019)
The tape label that carried East African ethnic-electronica to Boomkat and the world, and the artist-run experimental imprint that followed. Your pre-trip homework and your record-shop shopping list in one.
Street food
A rolex from a roadside stand
Chapati rolled around eggs — Kampala's own. Eat it standing up. The city runs on boda-bodas and this.
Stay
Kampala — central / Kamwokya side
STAY SLOT
Base two nights before the road east. Walkable to nightlife, easy on the boda network.
Hendrix · the Kampala canon
Nihiloxica — Kaloli · Bugandan bakisimba drums driven into techno. The clearest door into the sound.
Otim Alpha — Gulu City Anthems · acholitronix — electro-Acholi wedding music at impossible speed.

CHECK CURRENT NIGHT
The recurring party — which began platforming African ethnic-electronica at Kampala's Tilapia nightclub — is the thing Nyege Nyege scaled from. Formats and rooms move; find the current edition on the collective's socials for your week.
If it's not on
A boda tour of the live-music bars
Kampala's nightlife spreads across Kabalagala and Industrial Area. Ask where the sound-system nights are that week — the scene is word-of-mouth, and that's the pleasure of it.
Daytime
Rest, hydrate, buy cash
Draw Ugandan shillings in the city — the festival and the road run on cash, and card acceptance is unreliable once you leave Kampala.
Hendrix · deeper cuts DOWNLOAD before you lose signal
MC Yallah — Yallah Beibe · four-language rapid-fire rap over Debmaster's beats. Hakuna Kulala's sharpest.
Slikback — GER · weightless, violent club music. Where the collective points next.
Don Zilla — Ekizikiza Mubwengula · dub-blasted machine music from the Villa's own engine room.

The drive
Kampala → Jinja · ~80km east, 2–3 hrs
Private transfer or the Jinja bus (~$10–15). Leave the traffic of Kampala behind for the green of the east and the first sight of the river.
The other source
Source of the Nile, Jinja
Where the longest river on earth leaves Lake Victoria and starts north. A boat to the marker, the exact point Speke "found" in 1862. You came for the source of a sound; stand at the source of the river the same afternoon.
★ Nyege Nyege 2026 — Adrift Overland Camp, Kalagala Falls
11TH EDITION · "WAKALIWOOD EDITION" · 7 STAGES · 300+ ARTISTS · 40+ COUNTRIES · 19–22 NOV 2026

Camp-in on the Thursday. Four days and (crucially) four nights of programming that runs from traditional music to electronic outliers — singeli, afrobeats, gqom, and everything the labels have signed — spread over seven stages on a bend of white water. Beyond the music: art installations, film, workshops, and the Nile itself. Tickets through KayeTickets; the earlier you buy, the less you pay.

DAY SCORE
How to run it
Sleep in the day heat, live at night
The festival's reputation is built on its nights and its dawns — the best sets land in the small hours. Pace the days: shade, river, food, a nap. The camp is the venue and the accommodation at once.
The seven stages
Chase texture, not names
With 300+ artists across seven stages you cannot see it all — and shouldn't try. Let a stage pull you in by its sound. The whole ethic of the place is discovery over line-up-ticking.
Daytime Nile
White-water rafting · sunset cruise
ADRIFT / ON-SITE
Grade-5 rapids or a slow boat at golden hour, both from the same camp. The river is half the reason the festival is where it is.
Field Note
Capture one dawn
MEMORY LAYER
A single photo, the album that was playing, one word for how it felt — a 5am set as the mist comes off the Nile is the memory this whole Path is built to give you. One Field Note beats a hundred phone videos.
Hendrix · the wider East African net
Duma — Duma · Nairobi's grindcore-electronic extreme, Hakuna Kulala's heaviest.
Authentically Plastic — Raw Space · Kampala club deconstruction, for the deepest stage at the deepest hour.

Before you go

Uganda takes planning — check these

  • Reconfirm the dates and venue. 2026 is listed as 19–22 November at Adrift Overland Camp, Kalagala Falls, but Nyege Nyege has moved sites and shifted months before. Confirm on festival.nyegenyege.com and buy through the official ticketer (KayeTickets) before booking flights.
  • Entry admin is real. Most visitors need a Uganda e-visa (apply ahead online) and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry. Check your government's current travel advice for Uganda before you commit.
  • It's a cash economy once you leave Kampala. Draw Ugandan shillings in the city; don't rely on cards at the camp or on the road. There's little to no reliable signal on site — download your Hendrix sets and your tickets in advance.
  • The festival has faced political and "morality" pressure over the years — its own trademark was refused on morality grounds before the High Court ruled in the collective's favour in Feb 2025. It runs, and runs joyfully, but it's an underground event in a conservative environment: go respectful, low-key, and read the room.
  • The Villa is a home and a workplace, not a stop. Support the scene by buying the records and the festival ticket, not by turning up at a private residency. That's the difference between a pilgrim and a tourist.
