EXPEDITION SCORE / 100

The third Path proves the engine travels — and it's built on a room you already own, because Berghain is venue 003 in your atlas. This is the city where the sound you love was actually made: dub reverb dragged through a techno machine by two men and a record shop. Bowie made Heroes here, metres from the Wall. Basic Channel invented the whole texture here. Not a scenic drive but a corridor of concrete rooms and huge open fields — heritage, the dig, the deep night, the water.

Three days in the machine

Heritage, then the dig, then the field, then the deep night, then the water. Fallbacks built in, because in Berlin a door can always say no.

DAY SCORE
The pilgrimage
Hansa Studios — Köthener Str. 38 (the Meistersaal, "the Big Hall by the Wall")
BOOK AHEAD
Bowie cut "Heroes" here in 1977, the title track about lovers at the Wall below. Iggy, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, U2's Achtung Baby. Tours run on select dates via Berlin Music Tours — book ahead; it's a working studio.
History walk
Potsdamer Platz death-strip → East Side Gallery
The 1.3km of preserved Wall on Mühlenstr. by the Spree. Go at golden hour, before the crowds. The art-rock thread made physical.
Night (soft start)
Klub der Republik, Prenzlauer Berg
A faded-GDR bar-club up a staircase in an old swimming-pool building. No photos, cheap, records and beer. The gentle landing before the deep night.

Kreuzberg
STAY SLOT
Base here — wake, dig, eat and walk the canal without a train.
Hendrix · the ghosts
David Bowie — "Heroes" · hear it in the building it was made in. Non-negotiable.

The mecca
Hard Wax — Paul-Lincke-Ufer 44a (back courtyard, up the stairs)
Mark Ernestus's shop since 1989, the home of Basic Channel and the dub-techno you love. The single most important stop on this Path. You have to find it — that's the point.
Dig loop
Spacehall → Bikini Waxx → Record Loft → Sound Metaphors
All a short walk around Kottbusser Tor. A single afternoon of Kreuzberg crates. Break on the Landwehr Canal outside Hard Wax's door.
The breathe
Tempelhofer Feld
The old airport as a vast public field — walk the actual runways, huge sky, nothing on the horizon. Play the day's find on headphones. The best open space in the city.
Tonight
Tresor — Köpenicker Str. 70, inside Kraftwerk Berlin
CHECK RA TICKET SLOT
The lineage club, reborn in a cavernous ex-power station. The downstairs vault tunnel is the Detroit–Berlin axis in the flesh. Fallback ladder: Tresor → RSO → ://about blank.

★ Funkhaus Berlin — Nalepastr. 18, on the Spree
THE GDR RADIO COMPLEX · SAAL 1, ONE OF EUROPE'S GREAT ACOUSTICS · event-based

Franz Ehrlich's Bauhaus radio city on the river, now a studio-and-concert hub. If the calendar lands a Saal 1 ambient or modern-composition set, that's your payoff record, in a room built for sound. Riverside terrace, big skies, boats. Check the listings for your window.

The lakes
Müggelsee (near Köpenick) or Wannsee
Berlin's escape valve — the biggest lake, forested and calm, a short hop from the Funkhaus. Swim, walk, decompress. The "drive out" this Path needs.
Hendrix · release
Monolake — Ghosts · Robert Henke's deep Berlin ambient-techno, for the water and the way home.

Before you go

Berlin changes fast — check these

  • Berghain has no guaranteed entry, ever. The door is opaque by design. Best odds: small group or solo, dark/low-key, sober-seeming, quiet, small hours of Sunday. Build the night so a "no" isn't a ruined evening — Tresor / RSO / about blank are the fallback. No photos inside, enforced.
  • Hansa tours run on select dates only and rooms can close for live sessions — book directly and ahead, don't walk up.
  • Clubs close and migrate. Watergate has shut; ://about blank and others near the A100 motorway plan are under threat but open now; Wilde Renate was reprieved into 2026 but is fragile. Confirm each on Resident Advisor and the club's own page before routing.
  • Gigs aren't date-locked here — this is a repeatable template. Pull the real nights from ra.co/events/de/berlin and the club pages for your travel window. No dates invented.
